Helicopter Flights Suspended in Sagarmatha National Park Due to Local Resistance

The ongoing conflict over helicopter operations in Sagarmatha National Park and surrounding areas has led to the suspension of all helicopter flights starting from January 5, 2025. Local youth groups, community organizations, and stakeholders in Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality have raised concerns regarding the environmental impact, forest degradation, and disruption to wildlife habitats caused by frequent helicopter flights and landings.

Despite repeated negotiations between aviation authorities and local groups, no consensus has been reached. Tensions escalated when local groups reportedly obstructed helipads in the region by hoisting flags, effectively blocking flight operations. These groups have also issued warnings through media channels, threatening to take action against flight crews if unauthorized landings occur.

In light of these developments, helicopter operators have expressed concerns about the safety of their operations. As a precautionary measure, the Helicopter Operators’ Association of Nepal (HOAN) has announced a suspension of all helicopter flights in the region until security assurances are provided. Additionally, operators of STOL (Short Takeoff and Landing) aircraft have signaled that they may follow suit if safety concerns remain unaddressed.

The District Administration Office of Solukhumbu has issued a statement acknowledging reports of unauthorized interference with helicopter operations at various helipads in the region. The administration emphasized that such disruptions contravene established regulations, posing risks to emergency services, medical evacuations, and tourism activities. It has assured stakeholders that strict legal action will be taken against individuals or groups found obstructing helicopter operations.

The Helicopter Operators’ Association has expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to travelers, including tourists, due to the suspension of flights. They have highlighted that safety remains a top priority and urged local groups to cooperate in resolving the issue amicably.

The suspension has drawn attention to the need for balancing tourism promotion and environmental conservation in Nepal’s premier trekking destination. Stakeholders are now urging the government to mediate and provide a long-term solution to address the challenges posed by helicopter operations in sensitive areas like Sagarmatha National Park.
