Jaljala: Emerging Tourist Gem in the Heart of Dhaulagiri

Jaljala, nestled within the lush forests and expansive meadows of Dhaulagiri Rural Municipality-2 in Myagdi, is gaining popularity among travelers for its untouched beauty and serene environment. Surrounded by breathtaking Himalayan vistas, including the iconic peaks of Sisne, Putha, Gurja, Manapathi, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Annapurna, Machhapuchhre, and Manaslu, this natural paradise also offers awe-inspiring sunrise and sunset views.

Recently, Milan Khatri from Beni and his family visited Jaljala as part of their tour to Dhorpatan. Reflecting on his experience, Khatri shared, “The calm environment, constantly changing weather, and the refreshing mountain air made the time fly by. Sitting in the open meadow, gazing at the snow-capped peaks was like witnessing an artist’s canvas come to life.”

Standing at an elevation of 3,420 meters, Jaljala offers unique seasonal charms. During the monsoon, visitors can see herds of grazing animals, native wildlife, lush grasslands, hilly terrain, and dense forests. Spring brings vibrant rhododendron blooms, further enhancing Jaljala’s natural allure.

Fulbahadur Bishwakarma, a local “Gothstay” operator, mentioned a consistent influx of visitors: “Many domestic tourists who come to explore Dhorpatan also visit Jaljala for the Himalayan view. With the holiday season around Dashain and Tihar, providing accommodations has become quite challenging.” Despite Jaljala’s absence of permanent settlements, hotels, or restaurants, locals from Lulang have set up basic amenities for visitors, serving traditional foods like wild mushroom dishes, dhakayo greens, buffalo milk products, and mutton. However, camping tourists are advised to bring their supplies. Daily foot traffic has reportedly reached 20 to 50 tourists.

The journey to Jaljala is an adventure in itself. From Dhorpatan’s Pakathar, a rough road allows jeeps and motorcycles to reach Jaljala within an hour and three minutes, while the trek takes five to six hours. Another route involves a vehicle journey from Beni to Muna in Dhaulagiri Rural Municipality, followed by a five-hour uphill trek.

Jaljala serves as pastureland for the residents of Muna, Dar, Falyagaun, Lulang, Lamsung, Khoriya, and Mareni. According to Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve ranger Subedi, Jaljala has become a prime viewpoint for those touring Dhorpatan. In the fiscal year from July to October alone, 5,204 tourists visited Dhorpatan, with many including Jaljala in their itinerary.

Prem Prasad Pun, Chair of Dhaulagiri Rural Municipality, expressed dedication to developing Jaljala as a tourism destination. Infrastructure projects and promotional efforts are underway to boost accessibility from Myagdi and Baglung.
