Majhuwa Gadhi, a religious and historical site in Khotang’s Diktel Rupakot Majhuwagadhi Municipality-1, has recently attracted increased interest among both domestic and international tourists. Located just a 45-minute uphill walk from Diktel Bazaar, the site features a 918-step iron-railed path established seven years ago to ease accessibility, supported by Rs 4.05 million from the SBLL project and an additional Rs 2 million from the municipality. This infrastructure investment has turned the area into a favorite spot for morning walkers, with residents like Chatra Kumar Bajimaya, a Red Cross official, noting the pathway’s fitness benefits and serene environment.
The path to Majhuwa Gadhi is flanked by lush greenery and various indigenous flower species as part of a municipal initiative, “Phoolai Phoolko Pahad” (Hill of Flowers), to enhance the site’s natural beauty. This effort, launched three years ago, has resulted in blooming perennials that provide a fragrant, refreshing ambiance for visitors, particularly morning walkers.
Majhuwa Gadhi is historically significant, with evidence of King Ranbir Hang’s rule until 1804. The area is culturally rich, hosting festivals like Sakela, Ram Navami, and Teej, drawing Hindu and Kirat devotees. The Kalika Bhagwati Temple nearby continues traditional offerings, adding to the site’s spiritual draw.
Scenic views of Mt. Everest, the Himalayas, and the Terai plains further add to Majhuwa Gadhi’s appeal, especially on Fridays and Saturdays, when visitor numbers peak. Local authorities, led by Mayor Teertharaj Bhattarai, have been proactive in collaborating with provincial and federal governments to develop tourism infrastructure, hoping to stimulate the local economy.
Nestled amidst four defensive forts—Mahure Gadhi, Chuichumma Gadhi, Khamtel Gadhi, and centrally located Majhuwa Gadhi—the site not only offers historical insights but also panoramic views from its 2,000-meter-high vantage point, making it a year-round attraction with a unique blend of history, culture, and nature
