Kasya Danda, located in Amargadhi Municipality-7, has emerged as a popular destination for domestic tourists. Known for its stunning sunrise and sunset views, the site has seen a steady increase in visitors in recent years.
Spectacular Views Attracting Tourists
In addition to sunrise and sunset, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Amargadhi Municipality, Nawadurga, Ganyapdhura, and Ajaymeru Rural Municipality from the hilltop. Over 100 domestic tourists visit the site daily to experience these captivating vistas.
Historical and Religious Significance
Situated near the western stretch of the Dadeldhura-Baitadi Highway, Kasya Danda holds religious and historical importance. It is a 15-minute uphill walk from Surkal along the Mahakali Highway connecting Dadeldhura and Baitadi. The hill is recognized as one of the tallest in the district and is believed to have ancient, religious, and historical significance.
According to local legend, the hill is associated with figures like King Nagi Malla, Shikhar, Shaileshwar Mahadev, Bhumi Raj, and Ugratara Bhagwati Mata, underscoring its religious significance. At an altitude of 6,500 feet above sea level, Kasya Danda offers a serene retreat for visitors.
A Scenic Haven
Ajaymeru-3 resident Mahesh Air, who recently visited Kasya Danda, described it as a must-visit scenic spot. “I hadn’t visited before, but this place is incredibly beautiful,” he shared, highlighting the stunning sunrise and sunset views. Similarly, Alital resident Meena Saud, who visited with friends, expressed her admiration for the site, noting its untapped potential due to a lack of promotion.
Infrastructure Development
Over the past 6-7 years, Kasya Danda has experienced growing popularity among tourists. Local authorities, with support from Amargadhi Municipality, have developed essential infrastructure, including a viewpoint, observation tower, pathways, and seating areas, to enhance the visitor experience.
Bright Vision Club, based in Amargadhi-7, has played a significant role in promoting Kasya Danda’s tourism potential. Club President Deepak Raj Bhattarai believes that constructing a view tower could attract more domestic and international tourists, boosting economic activities in the area.
Opportunities for Growth
Local activist Siddharaj Pathak emphasized the need for policies to promote Kasya Danda through hotel construction and other infrastructure. He noted that the area offers breathtaking views of the Mahabharat Range, Doti, Achham, Baitadi, and parts of India.
A paved road connects Kasya Danda to Dadeldhura, located 12 kilometers to the north. It takes approximately 3 hours on foot or 25–30 minutes by motorcycle or car to reach the destination.
Historical Insights
According to 62-year-old local resident Keshav Bhandari, the hill has a rich history. “It is said that in ancient times, an elderly woman lived here. Based on local tales, this site once housed a royal palace,” he shared.
Although no physical remnants of the palace remain, local historian Mahesh Bhattarai claims that Kasya Danda’s history dates back over 2,500 years. He urged local authorities to conduct research to uncover more about its historical significance, adding that a stone mortar, referred to as “Okhaldhunga,” lies 1,500 meters below the hill.
Untapped Tourism Potential
Experts believe that Kasya Danda can become one of the most beautiful tourist destinations in the Sudurpaschim region if its tourism potential is harnessed. With proper promotion and development, this hidden gem could transform into a hub for economic growth and cultural preservation.
