The summit route of Mount Everest has officially opened for the 2026 spring climbing season after teams successfully fixed ropes to the world’s highest point on May 13 at 10:25 AM Nepal Standard Time. The completion of the route-fixing operation marked the end of weeks of intense work carried out under difficult weather and hazardous mountain conditions. The fixed rope reached the summit of Everest, standing at 8,849 meters (29,032 feet), allowing climbers and expedition teams to begin summit attempts during the narrow spring weather window. The achievement comes after what mountaineering officials described as one of the most difficult and uncertain early climbing seasons in recent years.

Massive Serac Delayed Everest Operations

This year’s Everest season began with major challenges after a huge glacial serac blocked the only viable passage through the Khumbu Icefall, one of the deadliest sections of the South Col route. According to expedition organizers, the ice formation measured approximately 55 meters in length and 28 meters in height, creating serious safety concerns for climbers and route-fixing teams. The obstacle delayed operations by nearly a week as teams assessed possible alternatives and worked to establish a safe crossing.

The Khumbu Icefall, located between Everest Base Camp and Camp I, is known for its constantly shifting ice towers, deep crevasses, and unstable terrain. It remains one of the most technically dangerous sections of the Everest climb.

The Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC) Icefall Doctors and the Expedition Operators Association of Nepal (EOA) eventually managed to establish a safe route through the hazardous area, allowing the climbing season to proceed.

Route Progressed Through Key High Camps

Following the successful passage through the Khumbu Icefall, route-fixing teams gradually advanced toward the summit. Officials confirmed that the fixed line reached the South Col on May 8, the Balcony at 8,430 meters on May 12, and finally the summit on May 13.

The rope-fixing operation is considered one of the most critical preparations for Everest expeditions, as it allows climbers from multiple teams to safely navigate the mountain’s steep and technical sections. Experienced Sherpa climbers carry out much of this dangerous work under extreme weather conditions, often climbing ahead of commercial expedition groups to secure ropes, ladders, and anchor points.

Sherpa Climbers Praised for Key Role

Expedition company 14 Peaks Expedition announced that two of its team members played a major role in the summit route-fixing effort this season. Pasang Nurbu Sherpa, a renowned climber and summit specialist, participated in the final push to the summit. He is also known as the climbing partner of Nima Rinji Sherpa, who became the youngest person to summit all 14 mountains above 8,000 meters.

Migmar Dhondup Sherpa, Senior Expedition Leader and climbing instructor at 14 Peaks Expedition, was also part of the route-fixing team. A veteran of multiple Everest seasons, he contributed extensive high-altitude leadership and technical expertise during the operation.

The company highlighted the immense effort required behind every Everest season, emphasizing that route preparation involves carrying heavy loads in thin air, fixing ropes in darkness, and making life-critical decisions under harsh weather conditions.

Sherpa Community Recognized as Backbone of Himalayan Mountaineering

Mountaineering organizations and expedition leaders praised the Sherpa community for their central role in making Everest accessible to climbers each season. The route-opening operation involved coordinated efforts from the SPCC Icefall Doctors, Expedition Operators Association of Nepal, Sherpa teams, and various expedition operators working on the mountain.

Climbing experts often describe Sherpa climbers as the backbone of Himalayan mountaineering due to their unmatched high-altitude skills, experience, and contribution to expedition safety. With the summit route now officially open, hundreds of climbers from around the world are expected to begin summit pushes in the coming days, depending on weather conditions and acclimatization schedules.

Everest Season Enters Crucial Phase

The opening of the summit route signals the beginning of the most important phase of the Everest spring climbing season. Climbers and guides are now closely monitoring weather forecasts for favorable summit windows, which are usually limited to a few days in May.

Despite the risks and extreme conditions, Everest continues to attract mountaineers from across the globe, reinforcing Nepal’s status as one of the world’s leading destinations for high-altitude adventure tourism.
