The Embassy of Nepal in Pakistan, in coordination with the embassies and high commissions of Thailand, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Vietnam, jointly organized a special programme on the occasion of Buddha Jayanti on May 1 in Pakistan. The Buddha Jayanti celebration was held in collaboration with the Government of Punjab and featured activities at the historic Dharmarajika Stupa and the Taxila Museum.
The programme brought together diplomats, government officials, monks, and cultural representatives, highlighting the shared Buddhist heritage across Asia and reinforcing spiritual and cultural connections among participating nations.
Ambassador Highlights Tourism and Cultural Potential
Speaking at the Taxila Museum, Nepal’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Rita Dhital, emphasized the global significance of Buddhist heritage sites as major pilgrimage destinations for over 500 million followers worldwide.
She noted that such sites hold immense potential for spiritual, cultural, and educational tourism. Ambassador Dhital stressed the importance of developing infrastructure to connect Buddhist circuits across South Asia, stating that improved connectivity would not only boost regional tourism but also support socio-economic development in local communities. She further highlighted that these destinations offer opportunities for visitors to practice mindfulness while enabling scholars to study Buddhist philosophy in its historical context.

According to a statement issued by the Embassy, the joint celebration by multiple Asian missions reflects Buddhism’s role as a unifying cultural and spiritual link across the region. Federal Minister for National Heritage and Culture Aurangzeb Khan Khichi graced the programme as the Chief Guest, while Sardar Ramesh Singh Arora, Minister for Minorities Affairs of Punjab, also participated. In addition, several high-ranking officials from federal and provincial governments, members of the diplomatic corps, and distinguished personalities were present at the ceremony.
