The Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) organized a grand felicitation ceremony to honor world-record-holding climber Mingma Gyalje Sherpa for his remarkable contributions to mountaineering and Nepal’s mountain tourism. Mingma G., widely recognized for his achievements, has made history by becoming the first Nepali climber to summit all 14 peaks above 8,000 meters without using supplemental oxygen. His remarkable feat adds a significant milestone to his climbing career.
In addition to this incredible achievement, Mingma recently completed climbs of the highest mountains on each of the seven continents, including the towering Mount Aconcagua in South America. His accomplishments don’t stop there he also reached the South Pole, undertaking a challenging skiing expedition to get there.
Mingma’s legacy as a trailblazer in high-altitude mountaineering continues to inspire adventurers worldwide, showcasing his unparalleled determination and resilience in conquering some of the world’s most formidable natural challenges. His journey solidifies his status as one of Nepal’s most accomplished mountaineers, blending the spirit of adventure with a deep connection to his roots.

Upon his arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, Mingma was welcomed with great enthusiasm by his relatives, well-wishers, and representatives from the mountain tourism industry.
Holding banners and congratulatory posters, the crowd greeted him with garlands, flowers, and traditional khadas. Key figures from NMA, including Senior Vice President Mr. Thakur Raj Pandey and General Secretary Mr. Mohan Lamsal, along with NNMGA President Mr. Tulsing Gurung, escorted Mingma through the VIP lounge.

The official felicitation program took place at Aranya Boutique Hotel, Nagpokhari, Naxal, where the NMA presented Mingma with a Letter of Honor. The ceremony was graced by the Honorable State Minister for Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, Mr. Arun Kumar Chaudhary, who praised Mingma for elevating Nepal’s global reputation in mountain tourism.

“Mingma G. has set a benchmark in mountaineering, proving the strength and skill of Nepali climbers,” said Minister Chaudhary. “I urge him to continue promoting the mountains of Karnali and the Far Western region. Congratulations on this incredible achievement!” Senior NMA leaders also lauded Mingma’s dedication.
Mr. Pandey and Mr. Lamsal emphasized his significant contributions and reiterated their commitment to advancing Nepal’s mountain tourism sector. Speaking at the event, NNMGA President Mr. Tulsing Gurung advocated for the establishment of a welfare fund for climbers, highlighting the risks associated with their profession.

“Climbers face life-threatening situations on every expedition,” said Gurung. “The government should create a welfare fund and offer income tax concessions for climbers.” Reflecting on his journey, Mingma shared his mountaineering experiences and aspirations for the future. “I began my expeditions in 2007 with Mount Everest,” he said. “Despite family concerns, I pursued this path and have demonstrated that Nepali guides can excel worldwide.”
Mingma emphasized the urgent need for a formal emergency rescue team and called on the government to introduce tourism policies well in advance of the trekking season to support tourism entrepreneurs.

Former Minister for Information and Communication Technology, Parbat Gurung, and ex-Member of Parliament, Jeep Tshering Lama, both congratulated Mingma Gyalje Sherpa for his significant contributions to Nepal’s tourism sector. Their acknowledgment underscores Mingma’s essential role in boosting the nation’s tourism industry, particularly in the mountaineering field.
The Nepal Mountaineering Association’s (NMA) tribute to Mingma is not just a celebration of his remarkable accomplishments but also a call to action for structural reforms that can enhance Nepal’s mountaineering and tourism sectors.
This recognition highlights the need for continued progress and modernization within these industries to further elevate Nepal’s status on the global tourism map. The collective efforts of leaders like Gurung, Lama, and Sherpa are integral to shaping a more robust and sustainable future for Nepal’s tourism industry.
