The Nepal National Tourism Business Organization (NNTBO) has called for immediate action from the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) to address several pressing issues within the country’s tourism sector. In a joint statement released by Acting President Rajendra Prasad Sapkota and General Secretary Yam Bahadur Khadka, the organization emphasized the need for urgent implementation of policies that could significantly impact the growth and sustainability of tourism in Nepal.
The statement also congratulated Deepak Raj Joshi on his appointment as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Nepal Tourism Board, expressing optimism about his leadership in addressing these crucial issues. However, NNTBO stressed the urgency of these reforms and urged the NTB operating committee and administration to expedite the process. “We draw the attention of the board operating committee and administration to implement the following points through the Nepal Tourism Board as soon as possible,” the statement read.
Key Reforms Demanded by NNTBO:
- Immediate Approval and Implementation of the NTB Budget (2081-2082): NNTBO called for the swift passage and execution of the Nepal Tourism Board’s budget for the fiscal year 2081-2082. The organization emphasized that delays in budget approval are hindering the timely implementation of essential tourism programs and activities.
- Private Sector Involvement in International Tourism Fairs: The organization demanded that NTB ensure the participation of the private sector in globally renowned tourism fairs such as the World Travel Market (WTM) and the Internationale Tourismus-Börse (ITB). According to NNTBO, the inclusion of private businesses in these events is essential to effectively promote Nepal’s tourism offerings on the global stage.
- Targeting New Tourism Markets: NNTBO highlighted the need for immediate action to identify and engage new tourism markets. The organization recommended that NTB collaborate with the private sector to organize progressive programs aimed at tapping into unexplored tourism markets, ensuring long-term growth and sustainability for the industry.
- Withdrawal of VAT on Air Tickets and Trekking: Another critical demand was the removal of Value Added Tax (VAT) on air tickets and trekking activities. The organization argued that these taxes increase the cost of visiting Nepal, making it less competitive in the global tourism market. Eliminating these taxes could potentially boost tourist arrivals and promote more affordable travel experiences.
- Strict Implementation of TIMS to Regulate FIT Trekkers: The organization stressed the need to enforce the purpose of the Trekking Information Management System (TIMS) by stopping Free Individual Trekkers (FIT) and installing checkposts at key entry points. This measure, according to NNTBO, is necessary to regulate tourism in remote areas, ensure tourist safety, and preserve the environment.
- Mandatory Guide and Porter for Trekkers: NNTBO advocated for the enforcement of a mandatory requirement for trekkers to hire a guide or porter, citing the importance of creating job opportunities within the local community and ensuring the safety of tourists trekking in Nepal’s mountainous regions. The organization argued that professional guides and porters can provide essential support and knowledge for trekkers, enhancing their overall experience.
- Global Media Campaign for Nepal’s Tourism Promotion: NNTBO called for an extensive media campaign to promote Nepal in the global market through internationally recognized platforms such as BBC and CNN. The organization believes that such promotional efforts are crucial for restoring Nepal’s image as a safe and attractive tourist destination, especially following negative media coverage of recent accidents.
- Utilization of Labour Welfare Fund through TAAN: The organization urged the immediate implementation of the Labour Welfare Fund, which is collected through TIMS, by channeling it through the Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal (TAAN). NNTBO emphasized that this fund should be utilized to support the welfare of those working in the trekking sector, improving their livelihoods and ensuring better working conditions.
- Leadership Role for Nepal Airlines Improvement: Finally, NNTBO called on NTB to take a proactive leadership role in revitalizing Nepal Airlines. The organization pointed out that a stronger, more efficient national carrier is essential for increasing tourist arrivals and improving Nepal’s connectivity with key international markets.
NNTBO’s list of demands reflects the current state of Nepal’s tourism sector, which is facing challenges on multiple fronts, including safety concerns, rising costs, and infrastructure issues. By addressing these concerns and implementing the suggested reforms, the Nepal Tourism Board can help rejuvenate the tourism industry, which remains a vital pillar of the country’s economy.
The organization’s joint statement concluded with a strong call to action, urging NTB to act swiftly and decisively. With the new leadership of Deepak Raj Joshi, there is hope that the necessary changes will be made to ensure Nepal’s tourism industry can thrive once again, attracting both domestic and international travelers to the country’s breathtaking landscapes and cultural heritage.
This set of reforms, if implemented effectively, could pave the way for a more competitive, resilient, and sustainable tourism industry in Nepal, benefiting local communities, businesses, and the national economy as a whole.
