The Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), in collaboration with eight prominent travel trade companies from Nepal, participated in the China International Travel Mart (CITM) 2024, held at the National Exhibition and Convention Center, Shanghai, from November 22-24, 2024. Organized by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the People’s Republic of China, CITM is China’s first State Council-approved international travel exhibition, established in 2001, showcasing the latest trends in global tourism under the theme “Nihao China” this year.
The Nepal stall at the event attracted significant interest from travel enthusiasts, tour operators, and media personnel over the three-day program. Representing Nepal alongside NTB were eight key travel companies, including Nepal Social Treks and Expedition, Nepal Big Mountain Travel Company, Dragon Holidays, Shuang Qi Tours, Saathi Nepal Travels and Tours, Adventure Outdoor Treks and Expedition, Pearl Holidays, Mountain Glory Forest Resort and Spa.
NTB officials, Mr. Khadga Bikram Shah and Mr. Kabindra Bhatta, actively promoted Nepal’s diverse tourism products and attractions, offering fresh updates tailored to Chinese visitors. Supported by Chinese language interpreters when necessary, the team engaged in fruitful interactions with outbound tour operators, fostering opportunities for business collaborations and customized tour package offerings.

Adding to the vibrant atmosphere, traditional Nepali cultural dance performances captivated visitors at the Nepal stall. The Honorary Consul of Nepal in Shanghai, Mr. Jianming Wu, praised Nepal’s active participation in the mart, emphasizing China’s immense potential as a tourism market for Nepal. He also reaffirmed his commitment to promoting Nepal among Chinese travelers.
China has consistently been a significant tourism market for Nepal. In the first ten months of 2024, Nepal welcomed 83,390 Chinese tourists, accounting for approximately 9% of its total international arrivals. These numbers signify a robust recovery toward pre-pandemic levels, with 2019 being the peak year for Chinese arrivals at 169,543, representing 15% of total international visitors.
Since being designated an Approved Destination Status (ADS) by the Chinese government in 2002, Nepal has maintained a steady influx of Chinese tourists. To further enhance this growth trajectory, a “Visit Nepal Year in China 2025” campaign has been proposed as a joint initiative by the governments of Nepal and China, aiming to drive quantum growth in Chinese visitors to Nepal. The NTB’s participation at CITM 2024 underscores Nepal’s strategic focus on fostering deeper ties with the Chinese tourism market and showcasing its unique travel experiences, rich culture, and natural beauty.
