Phalamdanda: An Emerging Destination for Nature and Culture Enthusiasts in Parbat

Phalamdanda, located in Jaljala Rural Municipality-5 of Parbat, has become an attractive destination for nature and culture enthusiasts. Situated at an altitude of 2,300 meters above sea level, Phalamdanda is gaining popularity among internal tourists, especially from nearby areas like Benighat, Baglung, and Kusma. The area is being developed as a key auxiliary destination to the main town of Benighat in Magdi District.

Local leader and youth activist Purka Pucha Pun shared that Phalamdanda has become a favorite among internal tourists who seek to relax in the serene natural environment. “Phalamdanda’s unique feature is its position at the highest point near Benighat, where tourists can immerse themselves in nature and culture,” Pun explained, adding that locals from Benighat, Baglung, and Kusma often visit during holidays.

With road improvements and the operation of community lodges, the area has seen an increase in visitors. Pun noted that Phalamdanda receives a heavy influx of tourists during Saturdays and public holidays, though it remains lively even on regular days.

Phalamdanda is part of the Karbakeli trekking route, which connects the tourist sites of Magdi and Parbat. It also serves as a key point along the Annapurna Dhawalagiri Community Environmental Trail. From the top of Phalamdanda, tourists can enjoy breathtaking views of the Dhawalagiri, Nilgiri, and Annapurna mountain ranges. Visitors can also witness the stunning sunrise and sunset, as well as panoramic views of the villages in Magdi, Parbat, and Baglung along the Kali Gandaki River.

In addition to the natural beauty, Phalamdanda offers a rich cultural experience, with the local Magar community showcasing their traditional art, culture, and hospitality. Guests are welcomed with folk songs and dances, including the Panche Baja, a traditional musical performance.

Access to Phalamdanda is convenient, with a two-and-a-half-hour trek from Benighat or a one-hour-and-twenty-minute journey by jeep or motorcycle. The community has established guesthouses with a capacity to accommodate up to 20 people, where visitors can savor local dishes such as chicken, goat meat, wild vegetables, millet, and buckwheat.

Tilak Jisi, the ward chairman, emphasized that infrastructure development is being prioritized to promote tourism in the area. He noted that the establishment of guesthouses and dining halls has resolved accommodation and dining challenges for tourists, creating opportunities for income generation and employment. Last year, the Lato-Kosero Festival was organized to further promote Phalamdanda.

Jaljala Rural Municipality’s Vice-Chairman, Deepak Acharya, stated that they are focused on developing Phalamdanda, Hampal, Dhairing’s Bhume Thakur, and Banau as tourist destinations, with a special emphasis on infrastructure development and promotion. He also mentioned that efforts are underway to address the drinking water issue in Phalamdanda through a federal government project.

As Phalamdanda continues to develop, it is expected to become a key attraction for both domestic and international tourists, offering a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural richness.
