A 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Dingri County in the Xigaze Autonomous Region of China early Tuesday morning, prompting the temporary closure of the Mount Everest (Mount Qomolangma) region.
According to the Regional Disaster Relief Headquarters, the devastating earthquake has claimed 53 lives and left 62 injured as rescue and relief operations continue in the affected area.
The Dingri Culture and Tourism Bureau reported that while hotel structures and nearby areas in the Mount Qomolangma region suffered significant disarray, all tourists and staff members were confirmed safe.
One of the vital scientific facilities in the area, the Qomolangma Station of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, experienced a power outage due to the disaster, adding to the challenges of recovery efforts.
The Meteorological Department has forecasted freezing temperatures in the region, with readings plunging as low as -18°C, further complicating rescue and relief operations.
Authorities have urged caution and advised travelers to avoid the region until further notice, while efforts are underway to restore infrastructure and ensure safety for future visitors.
