Promotion of Gurung Heritage Trail to Boost Tourism

The Gurung Tourism Entrepreneurs Association has initiated a promotional program for the Gurung Heritage Trail starting today. The trail connects Pokhara with Sikles, Kapuche, Kholasothar, Karpu Danda, Yangjakot, and back to Pokhara. This initiative aims to promote tourism along the route until Poush 13, as informed by Kismakumari Gurung, President of the Gurung Tourism Entrepreneurs Association, Gandaki Province.

“Under this year’s plan to promote three trails in three phases, we are starting with this segment. The second phase will focus on the Kholasothar-Ghalegaun-Ghanpokhara-Bhujung-Pasgaon-Tapro-Kholasothar-Sikles-Pokhara route, and the third phase will involve the Marshyangdi-Ghanpokhara-Maidi-Thurju-Koplek Kharka-Siurung-Harsingh Danda-Pokhara trail,” stated Gurung.

With the rapid expansion of road networks, traditional trekking routes are vanishing. The Gurung Tourism Entrepreneurs Association, in coordination with Nepal Tourism Board, and support from local governments in Kaski, Lamjung, and Manang, conducted a field study of the trail. Now formally launched, the trail will be promoted with a focus on preserving its natural beauty and cultural significance.

Boberjung Gurung, founding president of the association, shared that the promotional event involves 45 participants, including tourism entrepreneurs, guides, and media representatives. Financial support for the program includes NPR 300,000 each from the Nepal Tourism Board and Madi Rural Municipality, and NPR 200,000 each from the Gandaki Province’s Ministry of Industry and Tourism and the association.

A Trail of Cultural and Historical Significance

This trail holds cultural and historical importance for the Gurung community, as it traces the footsteps of their ancestors. Archeological studies by local and international experts have validated its historical significance. Conservation of ruins in Kholasothar can attract both domestic and international tourists, added Gurung.

Travelers on this trail can listen to folklore of carrying salt from Manang and enjoy pristine nature. Over a dozen auxiliary trails have been identified for diverse trekking needs, allowing tourists to spend 5–10 days exploring the area.

Unique Features of the Trail

The trail offers panoramic views of Annapurna, Machhapuchhre, Lamjung, Himlung, Ganesh, Himalchuli, and Manaslu ranges. Kapuche Glacier Lake, at an altitude of 2,450 meters, is one of the world’s lowest-elevation glacier lakes, while Kori serves as Nepal’s geographic midpoint.

For biodiversity enthusiasts, the trail offers rich flora and fauna. Medicinal plants like Jatamasi, Satuwa, and Wild Garlic, as well as vibrant Rhododendrons and alpine flowers, enhance the trekking experience. Bird species such as Danphe and Monal add to its charm.

Ward Chairperson Devijung Gurung emphasized the trail’s potential as a major tourism destination, offering cultural, ecological, and adventure-based experiences. The trail’s promotion will not only highlight its tourism potential but also preserve its natural and cultural heritage.
