Renowned wildlife photographer Chungba Sherpa has passed away at the age of 64. He died at 12:15 a.m. today while receiving treatment at Grande Hospital for a liver-related ailment, confirmed Phunuru Sherpa, Ward Chair of Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality-1.
Chungba Sherpa, a permanent resident of Lukla in Solukhumbu District, had been under medical care since last week and was placed on ventilator support. He is survived by two sons and three daughters.
In addition to his passion for wildlife photography, Chungba was a prominent figure in Nepali politics and tourism. He was affiliated with the Nepali Congress for many years, serving as the party’s Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality President. He also held the position of Chairman of the then Chaurikharka Village Development Committee.
Sherpa’s contributions extended to the tourism sector, and he had been actively involved in wildlife photography in recent years. He was a member of various national and international photography organizations, furthering Nepal’s image as a hub for wildlife and natural beauty.
The loss of Chungba Sherpa is deeply felt by the communities of Solukhumbu and beyond, where he was celebrated for his multifaceted contributions to photography, tourism, and public service.
