Second Edition of Tenzing Norgay Sherpa Open Climbing Competition Scheduled for Magh 16-17

The second edition of the Tenzing Norgay Sherpa Open Climbing Competition is set to take place on Magh 16 and 17. Organized jointly by the US Nepal Climber Association and the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association, the event aims to promote mountaineering sports, as announced during a press conference.

Speaking at the event, Jangbu Sherpa, founding president of the US Nepal Climber Association, stated that the competition is dedicated to honoring Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and fostering interest in climbing. Sherpa expressed confidence that the competition would inspire those passionate about mountaineering and boost adventure tourism in Nepal.

The organizers revealed that the qualifying rounds would soon be held at a location to be announced, while the semifinals and finals would take place at the Crimpanzee Adventure Center in Boudha. The competition will be conducted in two phases: qualifying rounds on the first day and semifinals and finals on the second. Participants aged 12 and above are eligible to compete.

Pemba Tenzing Lama, General Secretary of the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association, emphasized that the event is not just a competition but also a celebration of climbing culture, camaraderie, and the indomitable spirit of Tenzing Norgay Sherpa.

The competition will feature separate categories for men and women, with cash prizes for the top three winners. The first, second, and third-place winners in both categories will receive NPR 45,000, NPR 35,000, and NPR 15,000, respectively. Organizers anticipate participation from 40-45 men and 20-25 women this year.
