Seven Chinese Villages Honored as ‘Best Tourism Villages’ by UNWTO

The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has recognized seven Chinese villages as ‘Best Tourism Villages’ this year, according to China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

The announcement was made during the UNWTO meeting held in Cartagena, Colombia, on Friday, as per Beijing’s local time.

The awarded villages include Azheke in Yunnan, Guanyang in Fujian, Shibadong in Hunan, Taoping in Sichuan, Xiaogang in Anhui, Jitou in Zhejiang, and Yandunjiao in Shandong. These villages, spread across eastern, central, and western China, play a significant role in rural tourism development, representing distinctive geographical, cultural, and developmental models.

For instance, Azheke Village in Yunnan is situated at the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Honghe Hani Rice Terraces. The village has made notable strides in tourism development, with its residents contributing to tourism promotion through collective participation and a shared prosperity model. Utilizing traditional homes and lifestyles, the village has become a model for tourism-driven development.

To promote rural tourism, UNWTO launched the Best Tourism Villages Initiative in 2021. This initiative recognizes villages worldwide that excel in preserving cultural diversity, local values, and traditions while fostering sustainable rural development.
