TAAN Gandaki and French Ambassador Unite for Grand Annapurna I Anniversary Celebration

Today, on Kartik 30, 2081 (November 15, 2024), the Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal (TAAN) Gandaki Chapter held a significant meeting with the Ambassador of France to Nepal, Her Excellency Ms. Virginie Corvetal. The meeting marked an important step in planning the grand celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the first successful ascent of Annapurna I, which is scheduled for next year.

The discussion primarily revolved around organizing various events and programs to commemorate this historic milestone, paying tribute to the legacy of the late French climber Maurice Herzog, who was the first to conquer Annapurna I in 1950. The anniversary celebrations aim to honor this pioneering achievement while promoting the region’s rich mountaineering history.

One of the key topics of discussion was the master plan for the conservation, promotion, and development of the North Annapurna Trail. This trail, famously used by Herzog during his ascent, holds immense historical and touristic significance. Plans to enhance infrastructure, ensure sustainable tourism practices, and promote the trail among global trekkers were emphasized during the meeting.

Her Excellency Ms. Corvetal expressed her appreciation for Nepal’s commitment to preserving its mountaineering heritage and pledged France’s support in making the anniversary celebration a global event. Both parties agreed on the importance of such initiatives in strengthening bilateral ties, promoting tourism, and fostering international collaboration in sustainable mountain tourism.

TAAN Gandaki representatives highlighted the trail’s potential to attract adventurers and history enthusiasts from around the world, creating opportunities for the local economy while preserving its natural and cultural heritage.

This collaboration between Nepal and France reflects a shared commitment to celebrating mountaineering history and contributing to sustainable tourism development in the Annapurna region.
