Adverse weather conditions have caused significant disruptions to air travel, with multiple international flights being diverted due to low visibility. According to Tribhuvan International Airport authorities, the dense fog and poor visibility have resulted in at least half a dozen flights being rerouted.

Ranjji Sherpa, the spokesperson for the airport, reported that the thick fog had led to reduced visibility, forcing the diversion of flights operated by several airlines, including Jazeera Airways, Air India, and Fly Dubai. Specifically, two Jazeera Airways and Air India flights were diverted to Varanasi, India, while a Fly Dubai flight landed at Gautam Buddha International Airport in Lumbini.

Despite the disruptions, some flights were able to land after holding for a brief period, as visibility conditions gradually improved. “This morning, visibility was down to 1,600 meters, which did not meet the airlines’ required standards for landing. As a result, the flights were diverted. Currently, visibility has improved to 3,000 meters, but the fog and dust still caused challenges for some landings,” explained Sherpa.

The weather disturbances are attributed to the partial influence of western winds across the country. According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, this weather pattern is expected to bring light rain with thunder and lightning to some hilly regions of Koshi and Gandaki Provinces. Additionally, light snowfall is anticipated in a few higher mountain areas.

The department has issued a cautionary advisory, urging people to take necessary precautions to minimize the impact on daily life, agriculture, health, and transportation, including both road and air travel. Travelers are advised to check with their airlines for updates and remain alert to weather changes throughout the day.
