Cycling Campaign to Promote Sustainable Tourism in Jhapa

Under the slogan “Campaign for Sustainable Tourism, Healthy Lifestyle, and Community Pride,” a three-day cycling tour has been organized to showcase Jhapa district as a cycling tourism destination, promote sustainable and zero-waste tourism in eastern Nepal, and encourage a healthy, active lifestyle, according to Akash Shrestha, President of the local cycling club.

The program, titled “Ghumau Jhapa Cycle Tour,” will be held from Falgun 30 to Chaitra 2, with Tourism Office, Kakarbhitta serving as the main facilitator. This is the first time a cycling tour covering the entire district has been organized, encompassing all 12 municipalities of Jhapa.

Three-Day Cycling Journey Across Jhapa

According to Shrestha, the cycling event titled “Ghumau Jhapa by Cycle” will run from Falgun 30 to Chaitra 2. The Tourism Office in Kakarbhitta is the main facilitator of the program. This is the first-ever district-wide cycling tour in Jhapa, covering 12 municipalities over three days. The first day will feature a 60-kilometre journey, passing through Mechinagar, Buddhashanti, Arjundhara, Kankai, Shivasatakshi, Gauriganj, Jhapa, Bahradashi, Kachankawal, Bhadrapur, Haldibari, and Birtamode.

The route on the first day starts from the Tourism Office, Kakarbhitta, and proceeds through Bahundangi–49, Dhara, Madan Bhandari Highway, Barne Tea Garden, Arjundhara Jaleshwor Dham, and the Arjundhara Municipality community forest, before concluding at Jamunkhadi Wetland in Domukha. Shrestha emphasized that the route combines scenic landscapes, cultural landmarks, and ecological sites.

Second Day: Crossing 80 Kilometres Through Rural Landscapes

The second day of the tour will span approximately 80 kilometres, starting from Domukha and covering Maidhar, Chilla Gadh Dham, Shivganj Bazaar, Chauri, Hulaki Highway, Jhapa Bazaar, Rajgadh, Jalthal Forest, and Baniyani, eventually reaching Kachankawal, one of Nepal’s low-lying regions. The day’s journey highlights the district’s rural charm, diverse ecosystems, and local communities, promoting both eco-tourism and cultural appreciation.

Final Day: Concluding in Birtamod

The third and final day will cover 50 kilometres, beginning from Baniyani and passing through Kichchakbadh, Bhadrapur, and Haldibari, before concluding at Biratpokhari and finally arriving in Birtamod. This day will mark the official conclusion of the “Ghumau Jhapa by Cycle” program. Participants will enjoy a blend of challenging terrain, scenic rivers, and local hospitality, emphasizing both fitness and cultural engagement.

The journey begins at the Tourism Office, Kakarbhitta, and will pass through Bahundangi–49, Dhara–Madan Bhandari Highway, Barne Tea Garden, Arjundhara Jaleshwor Dham, Arjundhara Municipality, and the community forest, before reaching Jamunkhadi wetland and concluding at Domukha, said Aakash Shrestha, Tourism and Local Economy.

Chhabilal Khatiwada, Chief of the Tourism Office, emphasized that the cycling tour will support both domestic and international tourism, boost the local economy, and highlight key attractions such as border areas, religious sites, wetlands, and rural landscapes. The initiative aims to establish Jhapa as a cycle-friendly destination, while promoting sustainable tourism practices that leave minimal environmental impact.
