Massive Avalanche Hits Everest Region, Climbing Temporarily Suspended

A massive avalanche struck the Mount Everest region in Sankhuwasabha on Wednesday morning, causing significant damage along the route used by climbers. The avalanche occurred above the Everest Base Camp, impacting the path between Base Camp and Camp I. According to Liladhar Awasthi, Information Officer at the Department of Tourism, the avalanche buried essential climbing equipment, including ladders and ropes. “Four ladders and several climbing ropes were buried in the avalanche,” Awasthi reported.

Due to the damage, the ascent to Mount Everest has been temporarily halted. “Climbing operations have been suspended for a few days. We are currently observing the situation. Wind speeds in the area are still around 35 km/h. Decisions on further actions will only be made once the weather and conditions normalize,” Awasthi added. Authorities are closely monitoring the region to assess risks and ensure the safety of climbers before resuming expeditions.
