A book titled ‘Sherpa, A Survivor’s Story: Everest Avalanche 2014’, based on the life of experienced mountaineer and trainer Dawa Tashi Sherpa, was officially launched in a special ceremony held in Kathmandu on Saturday.
Dawa Tashi Sherpa, who also serves as the President of the Nepal Mountain Leader Association, has written this book recounting his firsthand experiences during the devastating avalanche that struck the Everest region in 2014. The book offers a poignant, realistic, and emotionally moving account of the tragedy that took the lives of 16 Sherpas and shocked the global mountaineering community.
Through this publication, Sherpa not only reflects on the harrowing moments he personally faced but also sheds light on the broader struggles of the Sherpa community living and working in Nepal’s high Himalayan regions. The book explores the profound psychological, cultural, and socio-economic impacts the disaster had on Sherpas, many of whom risk their lives to guide climbers from around the world.

The narrative also critically examines the challenges faced by Nepal’s mountain tourism sector, particularly the lack of adequate safety measures, recognition, and support for those who work in perilous conditions.
Having spent years as a mountain guide across Nepal’s high-altitude terrains, Dawa Tashi brings deep insight and authenticity to his writing. His storytelling reflects a blend of personal trauma, collective grief, and the enduring resilience of the Sherpa people.
‘Sherpa, A Survivor’s Story: Everest Avalanche 2014’ serves as both a tribute and a wake-up call highlighting the human cost behind Himalayan expeditions and calling for greater respect and safety for Nepal’s mountain workers.
