Tulsipur Sub-Metropolitan City-19, Chhilikot, has seen a steady increase in the number of tourists in recent times. The region, rich in historical and natural significance, has been attracting visitors due to its breathtaking landscapes, cultural heritage, and recent infrastructural developments.
According to resident Prabir Pun, there has been a continuous rise in the number of tourists arriving to explore this historical site, which dates back to the 15th and 16th centuries when it was ruled by King Meghnath Shah.
The influx of visitors is primarily facilitated by two road routes one via Beljhundi and the other through Sangram Barracks. “Currently, tourists are using these two routes to reach Chhilikot. From there, they have to walk approximately seven kilometers to reach the site,” Pun explained.
“The road leading to Chhilikot is currently being blacktopped, and once completed, accessibility will be greatly improved. This will not only make it easier for visitors but also significantly increase the number of tourists coming here.” According to Pun, even in the current state, on some days, as many as 1,500 tourists visit Chhilikot.
Chhilikot is home to numerous attractions that appeal to both religious pilgrims and nature lovers. The area features a newly constructed view tower that provides stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. Visitors can also explore the Kalika-Malika temples, which hold great religious significance. In addition, the site preserves the ruins of an ancient royal palace where the rulers of the region once resided.
One of the main draws of Chhilikot is the mesmerizing view it offers. Tourists can witness the majestic Himalayan peaks, including Sisne and Dhaulagiri, from the site. Moreover, the vast plains of Dang, along with the picturesque hills of Salyan, Rolpa, and Rukum, create a breathtaking visual experience.
The region is also home to the famous Malagiri hills, which add to its geographical uniqueness. Additionally, a zipline has been constructed in the area, providing adventure enthusiasts with an exciting recreational activity.
There are three significant ‘Giri’ (hill) sites in Nepal and neighboring India. The first, Purnagiri, is located in India, while the second, Chandragiri, is situated in the northern part of Kathmandu. The third, Malagiri, is in Chhilikot, Dang. Experts believe that this geographical and historical connection has further contributed to the growing interest in the region.
The presence of the Kalika and Malika temples in Chhilikot enhances its religious importance, making it a sacred destination for Hindu pilgrims. To make the journey more accessible and convenient for visitors, stairways have been built to reach both the temples and the view tower. These developments are expected to boost tourism further, as devotees and history enthusiasts will find it easier to explore the region’s attractions.
Recognizing the growing tourism potential of Chhilikot, several development projects have been proposed. A feasibility study for the construction of a cable car in the area has already been conducted, and the results have been promising. Additionally, paragliding trials have been completed, indicating that the region has significant potential for adventure tourism. If these projects are implemented, Chhilikot could soon become one of Nepal’s most prominent religious and tourism destinations.
The local authorities and stakeholders believe that the combination of religious significance, natural beauty, and adventure tourism will make Chhilikot a must-visit destination for both domestic and international tourists. The integration of modern infrastructure, such as the cable car and adventure sports facilities, would elevate the area’s appeal to a global audience.
Chhilikot is not just a scenic destination but also holds immense historical significance. It is believed that during Nepal’s unification campaign, the region was annexed by Bahadur Shah, the brother of King Prithvi Narayan Shah, under the reign of Queen Rajendra Laxmi Devi Shah. This integration marked an essential milestone in Nepal’s territorial expansion.
Historical records suggest that Chhilikot played a crucial administrative role in the past. Until the year 2006 B.S. (approximately 1949 A.D.), the land revenue office operated from Chhilikot, making it a significant economic and political hub during that era. The presence of ancient ruins and remnants of past governance in the area further adds to its historical value.
With the increasing popularity of Chhilikot, efforts are being made to enhance tourism-related infrastructure. Water has been lifted from Satmule to supply the region, ensuring a steady water supply for both locals and visitors. Additionally, Nepal Police has been actively managing security to maintain a safe environment for tourists.
Local authorities, along with tourism stakeholders, have been working on improving the overall management of the site. “Initiatives are being taken to ensure the proper management of this region. With the development of essential infrastructure and promotional efforts, we believe tourism will flourish, benefiting the local community as well,” said Prabir Pun.
He emphasized that if Chhilikot is marketed effectively as a tourist destination, the economic benefits would be significant. Increased tourism would lead to employment opportunities for residents, encourage business growth, and boost the overall economy of the region. The local government has been urged to invest in promotional campaigns to attract a wider audience and establish Chhilikot as a recognized destination on the tourism map of Nepal.
Chhilikot’s rich blend of history, culture, and natural beauty makes it a hidden gem in Nepal’s tourism landscape. With increasing tourist arrivals, ongoing infrastructure development, and ambitious projects such as the proposed cable car and paragliding activities, the region is poised to become a major tourist hotspot in the coming years.
