Budhanilkantha municipality has initiated a process to enlist the Budhanilkantha Temple as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The effort aims to recognize the temple’s historical and cultural significance, strengthen conservation efforts, and promote global recognition.
The local authorities have launched discussions on formally including the Budhanilkantha statue and temple area in the World Heritage Site. The enormous stone-carved statue of Lord Vishnu believed to have been established in the era of Vishnu Gupta in the second century, stands as a remarkable testament to Nepal’s rich historical and cultural legacy.
Discussions on this initiative have involved government bodies, historians, cultural experts, intellectuals, writers, and journalists. Authorities have pledged to continue such discussions in the coming days to solidify the proposal.

During a recent gathering, prominent figures such as Prof. Dinesh Raj Pant, theologian Dr. Govinda Tandan, Nepal Bhasa Academy Chancellor Malla K Sundar, Nepal Academy of Fine Arts Chancellor Narad Mani Hartamchhali, along with writers and journalists Sneha Sayami, Shyam Rimal, and Shreesh Bhandari, emphasized the need for Budhanilakantha municipality to provide adequate evidence on the architectural and cultural significance of the temple.
They stressed the importance of documenting and specializing the temple’s assets to strengthen the case for UNESCO recognition. Additionally, experts suggested that the local authorities conduct a comprehensive study on the natural aspects of the Shivapuri-Budhanilkantha area, as its ecological significance could further bolster the proposal for World Heritage Site status.
