Community Homestay Launched in Ghurkesh Village, Chitwan

Ghurkesh village in Ichchhakamana Rural Municipality-2, Chitwan, has officially launched a community homestay program to promote tourism and boost local income. The initiative, supported financially by the rural municipality, is managed by local residents aiming to attract more tourists to the area.

The homestay was inaugurated by Narayan Prasad Adhikari, the head of the District Coordination Committee, Chitwan. During the event, he expressed confidence that the program would enhance local livelihoods. He stated, “Tourists visiting the nearby historic site of Upardang Gadhi often face a shortage of accommodations. With this homestay, they now have an alternative, which will directly benefit the local economy.”

Dan Bahadur Gurung, Chairperson of Ichchhakamana Rural Municipality, highlighted the municipality’s commitment to tourism promotion and income generation for locals. He mentioned that the municipality provided financial support to establish homestays in 14 households under the tourism promotion program. Gurung also emphasized that the program will help preserve the Gurung community’s unique culture, traditions, lifestyle, and attire while contributing to economic growth.

Ghurkesh village is predominantly inhabited by the Gurung community. According to local resident and former ward chairperson Chitra Bahadur Gurung, the area holds historical significance, with a house that once hosted an agricultural bank now converted into a homestay. This house, popularly known as “Bank Ghar,” continues to be a notable landmark.

Previously, Ghurkesh village remained overlooked due to its remote location and lack of promotion. However, the construction of roads has significantly improved access, encouraging tourist visits. The proximity of Ghurkesh village to the historic Upardang Gadhi Fort and Mayatar has positioned it as an emerging tourist destination. With the introduction of the homestay program, an increase in tourist activity is anticipated, further uplifting the local economy and promoting the region’s cultural heritage.
