Promotion of Traditional Cuisine Can Boost Tourism, Stakeholders Say

Stakeholders and visitors to the Traditional Cuisine Festival held in Bharatpur Metropolitan City-27 have emphasized that promoting indigenous dishes can attract both domestic and international tourists.

Speaking at the festival, Nir Prasad Lamichhane, a visitor from Bharatpur Metropolitan City-10, highlighted the potential of traditional Nepali cuisine to draw tourists. He stated, “Using locally produced ingredients in traditional dishes can significantly support eco-tourism and contribute to the national economy.”

Nisha Mahato, representing a stall showcasing Tharu community cuisine, underlined the importance of educating younger generations about traditional food. “The dishes we prepare here are as authentic as homemade meals. Teaching this heritage to the younger generation is vital for increasing tourist interest,” she said, lamenting the lack of awareness among youth about their cultural food heritage.

Similarly, Suresh Kumal, from a stall featuring Kumal community delicacies, stressed the need to preserve cultural practices for sustainable eco-tourism development.

Deepak Dawadi, Ward Chairperson of Bharatpur-23, who attended the event, remarked that such festivals play a crucial role in cultural education. “Programs like this are beneficial for passing on traditions and attracting tourists,” he noted.

The Traditional Cuisine Festival, which began on December 27, 2024 (Poush 12), showcased a variety of dishes from communities such as Kumal, Darai, Tharu, Magar, Gurung, Majhi, and Musahar. The event was organized as part of the annual celebration of Bharatpur Visit Year, aiming to promote local food and culture while enhancing tourism in the region.
