he second edition of the Tenzing Norgay Sherpa Open Climbing Competition has officially begun at Gateway Adventure Hub, Jagadol. The event was inaugurated by Gokarneshwor Municipality Mayor Dipak Kumar Rijal, who expressed his excitement, stating that he felt honored to mention the name of Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and emphasized the significance of such events in Nepal, a country recognized globally for its mountains. He also assured that the municipality would support climbing-related initiatives, including the possible construction of a climbing wall at Shahid Park.
Jointly organized by the US Nepal Climber Association and the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association, the competition saw applications open from January 15 to 25, attracting over 50 participants. According to Serap Jangbu Sherpa, founding president of the US Nepal Climber Association, the event will take place over two days (February 1-2, Magh 16-17). Participants aged 12 and above are eligible to compete in separate men’s and women’s categories. The winners will receive cash prizes of NPR 45,000 for first place, NPR 30,000 for second place, and NPR 15,000 for third place.
The competition has garnered significant sponsorship support, with Heli Everest as the Title Sponsor, Seven Summit Treks as the Gold Sponsor, and Himalayan Guides Nepal Treks & Expeditions along with the Everest Sherpa Foundation as Silver Sponsors. Additionally, AM WBLM Base Camp Lodge has supported the event as a Bronze Sponsor. This competition aims to promote rock climbing culture in Nepal and provide a platform for aspiring climbers to showcase their talent.
