Tharu Community Celebrates Maghi Festival in Kathmandu’s Tudikhel

The Tharu community is celebrating this year’s Maghi Festival at Tudikhel, Kathmandu, with a two-day event on January 13 and 14. Premil Lal Chaudhary, Chairperson of the Tharu Welfare Assembly and Coordinator of the Tharu National Maghi Festival Main Celebration Committee, shared that the festival marks the Tharu New Year and has been celebrated in Kathmandu since 2059 BS.

The first day of the festival includes a Zita Marna programme and a blood donation drive, while the second day is dedicated to the main Maghi celebrations. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is scheduled to inaugurate the event, which is being held under the theme: “Our campaign is to preserve, enhance, and promote Tharu culture, calls for proportional inclusive access to all.”

The festival will feature approximately 100 stalls, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Tharu community. Traditional Tharu dances such as Maghauta, Sakhiya, Jhumra, and Ragani, along with songs, will be performed.

Visitors will also have the chance to savor authentic Tharu cuisine, including Dhikri, Andik Bhat, fish, pork, pigeon, Ghogi, crab, and Masular. Additionally, Tharu handicrafts such as Dhakiya, Dhakli, Delwa, Bhauka, Bhauki, and Deliya will be on display.

The event serves as an opportunity to promote and preserve the cultural heritage of the Tharu community while providing a platform for showcasing their traditions and craftsmanship.
