Tourism Fiji wins PATA Gold Award for pioneering AI-powered marketing in China

FIJI: Tourism Fiji has received a prestigious Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Gold Award for its pioneering use of artificial intelligence to market Fiji as a holiday destination to Chinese travelers. The organisation was recognised in the Best Use of Emerging Technology in Marketing category for its project, AI-Powered Destination Marketing: Fiji’s World-First End-to-End AI Ecosystem for the Chinese Market. The award highlights Fiji’s growing focus on technology-driven tourism promotion and recognizes an innovative approach that connects travelers with destination inspiration, personalized trip planning and booking through an integrated digital journey.

A new benchmark for destination marketing for PATA

The PATA Gold Awards are among the prominent recognitions in the Asia Pacific travel and tourism industry, honouring achievements in areas including marketing, sustainability, human capital development and innovation. Tourism Fiji’s success in the emerging technology category reflects the strategic and measurable nature of its AI initiative. The organization has developed what it describes as the first fully integrated AI-powered marketing ecosystem by a national tourism organization, bringing several stages of the travel journey together rather than treating destination promotion, trip planning and booking as separate activities.

Tourism Fiji Board Chairperson Ilisapeci Matatolu said the award represents an important recognition of Fiji’s long-term tourism strategy and its commitment to investing in innovative and sustainable marketing. She also praised the organization’s China team and its technology partners, TikTok and Fliggy, for their collaboration in developing the initiative. According to Matatolu, the recognition provides additional motivation for Tourism Fiji to continue exploring new approaches that can strengthen the country’s international tourism position while creating lasting value for the national economy.

AI connects inspiration with travel planning and booking in PATA

At the center of the project is an integrated digital system designed around the way Chinese travelers discover, plan, and purchase international holidays. TikTok functions as the inspiration and AI itinerary planning platform, allowing potential travelers to discover Fiji and move from viewing destination content toward personalized travel planning. The system is designed to make the process more interactive by using conversational artificial intelligence to help users explore travel options and develop itineraries based on their interests and preferences.

The booking component is supported by Fliggy, Alibaba’s travel platform, which uses Qwen AI technology to connect travel intentions with real-time purchasing opportunities. The system can combine conversational booking with live pricing, available inventory and personalized recommendations, allowing travelers to move more easily from deciding where they want to go to making an actual reservation. By bringing these stages together, Tourism Fiji has created a closed-loop model in which destination marketing is directly connected with measurable commercial outcomes.

Results show strong commercial potential

Tourism Fiji said the AI ecosystem has already generated measurable results in the Chinese market. The initiative achieved a 15% conversion rate from travel planning to booking, while its promotional activity on TikTok generated more than 500 million impressions. The campaign also produced more than US$1 million in media advertising equivalent value, demonstrating the potential for artificial intelligence and platform partnerships to deliver both broad destination visibility and direct commercial results.

These figures are significant because destination marketing organizations have traditionally focused heavily on generating awareness and inspiring potential visitors, while the actual booking process has often taken place through separate platforms. Tourism it’s model attempts to close that gap by creating a continuous journey from discovery to planning and transaction. The approach could provide a useful example for other tourism boards seeking to measure not only how many people see their campaigns, but also how effectively those campaigns influence actual travel purchases.

Strategy developed through partnerships with TikTok and Fliggy

The award-winning ecosystem of PATA is the result of a broader strategic process involving Tourism Fiji, TikTok and Fliggy. Tourism Fiji Chief Executive Officer Dr. Paresh Pant said the initiative developed from an earlier Exchange the World: Fijicreator campaign and gradually expanded through deeper cooperation with TikTok on AI-based travel planning and with Fliggy on intelligent booking solutions. The development demonstrates how a tourism marketing campaign can evolve from traditional destination promotion into a more sophisticated digital travel platform.

Tourism Fiji strengthened these partnerships during a strategic mission to China in April 2026. During a workshop with TikTok, the organizations reviewed the results of their campaign and examined how conversational AI could be used to transform destination discovery into personalized travel planning. Tourism Fiji subsequently signed a Strategic Cooperation Memorandum with Fliggy in Hangzhou, establishing cooperation in areas including joint tourism-product development, destination branding, full-chain digital marketing and insights into outbound Chinese travelers.

Designed specifically for the Chinese outbound market

Its approach has been tailored specifically to the needs and behavior of the Chinese outbound tourism market, which remains strategically important to the island nation. Vincent Zheng, Regional Director of Asia and Global Chinese Market at Tourism Fiji, said the ecosystem was developed from an understanding of how Chinese travelers discover destinations, plan holidays and make bookings.

Rather than applying a single digital marketing strategy across all international markets, it worked with its partners to adapt the AI Travel Planner to local travel preferences. This market-specific approach is particularly important in international tourism, where consumer behavior, preferred digital platforms and booking habits can differ considerably between countries. Tourism Fiji sees the continued development of the ecosystem as an opportunity to strengthen its position in China and encourage more travelers to consider Fiji for long-haul holidays.

Fiji strengthens its position in the Chinese market

China is currently Fiji’s fourth largest international source market, while Fiji remains the leading long-haul island destination for Chinese travelers. This makes the Chinese market an important component of the country’s broader tourism strategy. Tourism Fiji’s investment in AI-powered marketing is therefore aimed not simply at technological innovation but at strengthening the destination’s competitiveness in a market with significant potential for international travel growth.

The strategy also reflects a wider transformation taking place in global tourism marketing. Travelers increasingly expect digital platforms to help them move quickly from discovering a destination to comparing options, planning itineraries and completing bookings. By integrating these stages into a single consumer journey, Tourism Fiji is positioning technology as a practical tool for increasing marketing efficiency and improving the traveler experience rather than using AI solely as a promotional feature.

Innovation supports Fiji’s wider tourism expansion

The PATA recognition comes as Fiji prepares for further expansion of its tourism infrastructure. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Hon. Viliame Gavoka said tourism remains one of Fiji’s most important economic pillars and stressed the need for investments to generate long-term value. The country currently has more than 5,500 new hotel rooms and over FJD 3 billion in tourism developments in the pipeline, creating additional capacity that will require effective international marketing to attract future visitors.

In this context, the AI ecosystem could play a role in supporting Fiji’s wider tourism growth by helping the country reach potential travelers more efficiently and connecting promotional activity with actual bookings. The combination of new accommodation capacity, digital innovation and targeted international marketing reflects Fiji’s broader ambition to remain competitive in the global tourism market while expanding its visitor economy.

PATA recognition puts Fiji at the forefront of tourism technology

Tourism Fiji’s PATA Gold Award marks more than a conventional marketing achievement. It highlights the growing importance of artificial intelligence, personalized travel planning and digital booking integration in the future of destination marketing. By connecting TikTok’s ability to inspire travelers with Fliggy’s booking capabilities, it has created a model designed to follow the traveler throughout the decision-making process, from the first moment of destination discovery to the final transaction.

The recognition could also encourage other national tourism organizations across the Asia-Pacific region to explore similar technology-driven approaches. As competition among destinations intensifies, tourism boards are increasingly looking for ways to make marketing campaigns more measurable, personalized and commercially effective. Tourism Fiji’s award-winning initiative demonstrates how strategic partnerships with major digital platforms can turn emerging technology into a practical tourism-marketing tool.

A technology-led vision for its tourism future

The PATA Gold Award ultimately reinforces Tourism Fiji’s ambition to combine innovation with long-term destination growth. The initiative has already demonstrated substantial digital reach and booking conversion in the Chinese market, while its partnerships with TikTok and Fliggy provide a foundation for further development. Tourism Fiji plans to continue working with both companies and return to China later in 2026 to strengthen those relationships and advance the AI ecosystem.

For Fiji, the project represents a shift toward a more connected model of international tourism marketing, one in which inspiration, personalized planning and booking are brought together through technology. As the country prepares for major tourism investment and additional hotel capacity, the ability to attract travelers through smarter and more targeted digital experiences could become increasingly important. The PATA Gold Award therefore positions Tourism Fiji not only as a successful destination marketer, but also as a leading example of how AI can reshape the way destinations compete for international travelers.
