Nepal and Vietnam Chart Bold Path Forward in Diplomatic Relations

Vice President of Nepal, Ram Sahay Prasad Yadav, held delegation-level talks today with the Vice President of Vietnam, H.E. Ms. Vo Thị Anh Xuan, who is currently in Nepal on a three-day official visit. The meeting, held in Kathmandu, was marked by a warm, friendly, and cordial atmosphere, reflecting the deep-rooted friendship between the two nations.

According to Prakash Adhikari, Joint Secretary at Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the discussions covered bilateral, regional, and international issues of mutual interest. Both sides exchanged views on strengthening cooperation and deepening the relationship that has been built on mutual respect for sovereignty, goodwill, and friendship.

Focus on Religious and Cultural Tourism

During the talks, the two Vice Presidents acknowledged the religious and cultural similarities between Nepal and Vietnam. They highlighted the vast potential for promoting religious and cultural tourism as a means to enhance people-to-people connections.

Both leaders emphasized the importance of utilizing the shared Buddhist heritage and cultural linkages to attract tourists, foster mutual understanding, and promote cultural exchanges. Such cooperation, they noted, could contribute significantly to the economies of both countries.

Commitment to High-Level Exchanges

The two leaders agreed to promote high-level visits and exchanges at ministerial and various other levels to further strengthen bilateral relations. The commitment includes facilitating ministerial visits, expert-level interactions, and joint programs that would help translate diplomatic goodwill into concrete action.

On this occasion, discussions were also held on expanding air connectivity between Nepal and Vietnam. Both sides recognized that enhanced direct flights or improved flight links would not only boost tourism but also facilitate business, trade, and cultural exchanges.

Economic Cooperation and Investment Opportunities

Highlighting Vietnam’s impressive economic growth, Vice President Yadav expressed Nepal’s interest in learning from Vietnam’s development model. The talks included discussions on investment opportunities, particularly in areas such as trade, technology, and infrastructure.

Both leaders underscored the importance of boosting bilateral trade by identifying potential sectors for cooperation. They also discussed enhancing collaboration in digital technology, renewable energy, and tourism infrastructure. Mr. Adhikari noted that the meeting also covered ways to advance people-to-people relations through educational exchanges, cultural programs, and business partnerships.

Celebrating 50 Years of Diplomatic Relations

This visit by Vice President Vo Thị Anh Xuan holds historic significance as it is the first high-level visit from Vietnam to Nepal. The year 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Nepal and Vietnam, adding symbolic importance to this trip.

Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to further nurturing their diplomatic ties, which have always been based on mutual trust and respect. They also agreed to continue supporting each other in international forums and regional platforms on issues of common interest.

Vice President Xuan’s visit comes at the friendly invitation of Vice President Yadav. She arrived in Nepal on Saturday and will complete her official engagements before returning to Vietnam on Bhadra 9 (August 25, 2025).

During her stay, she is scheduled to meet other high-ranking officials, visit cultural and religious heritage sites, and explore avenues for expanding cooperation in tourism, trade, and investment. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the visit is a milestone in Nepal-Vietnam relations and is expected to open new avenues of cooperation in multiple sectors.

Strengthening Future Partnerships

Both sides concluded the meeting with optimism, agreeing to work together for mutual prosperity and to strengthen partnerships in tourism, trade, investment, and cultural exchange. The discussions highlighted the importance of shared values, such as respect for sovereignty, friendship, and peace, that continue to guide Nepal-Vietnam relations. As Nepal looks to diversify its economic partnerships and Vietnam seeks to expand its presence in South Asia, this visit sets the tone for a new chapter in bilateral cooperation.
