EOA Launches Elite Rope Fixing Mission for Manaslu’s 2025 Autumn Climbing Season

The Expedition Operators Association (EOA) has officially launched the rope fixing mission for Mt. Manaslu as the 2025 autumn climbing season draws near. In a ceremonial event held this morning at Hotel Manaslu in Kathmandu, the Manaslu summit flag was formally handed over to the rope fixing team. EOA President Dambar Parajuli extended his best wishes to the climbers, emphasizing the importance of this mission for ensuring the safety and success of the upcoming expeditions on the world’s eighth-highest peak.

The rope fixing operation, a critical part of preparing a mountain for seasonal climbs, ensures that safe and secure climbing routes are established from base camp to the summit. This year, the operation will be led by a highly skilled team under the coordination of mountaineer Mingma David Sherpa, operating under the EOA banner, with logistical support provided by Seven Summit Treks. The team will officially depart for Manaslu tomorrow, marking the beginning of a meticulously planned mission that sets the tone for the season.

Team Composition and Leadership

The 2025 autumn Manaslu rope fixing team features some of Nepal’s most experienced high-altitude climbers. The team will be headed by Tashi Sherpa as team leader, with Chhiring Bhote serving as co-leader. Other members include Pasang Sherpa, Hira Bhote, Tashi Gyalzen Sherpa, Karma Sharki Sherpa, and Lakpa Sherpa. These climbers bring decades of combined mountaineering expertise, with multiple ascents of Manaslu and other Himalayan giants under their belts.

According to the EOA, each member was carefully chosen not only for their climbing skills but also for their ability to work cohesively in challenging high-altitude conditions. The rope fixing mission demands both physical endurance and precise teamwork to ensure the route is secured safely for hundreds of climbers who will attempt Manaslu this season.

A Shift in Operational Strategy

This year’s rope fixing operation marks a significant shift in the way EOA handles the process. In previous years, the association awarded rope fixing responsibilities through an open application system, allowing various expedition agencies to bid for the task. While this system brought diverse operators into the process, it sometimes led to fragmented coordination and logistical inconsistencies.

For 2025, EOA has taken direct responsibility for the entire operation. This means that the association itself has selected and appointed the climbing team, arranged all necessary gear and equipment, and secured payment for the expedition. By taking the reins, EOA aims to create a streamlined, coordinated, and efficient rope fixing process, ensuring that climbers have a safe, reliable route to the summit from the earliest expeditions of the season.

Support from Seven Summit Treks

EOA has partnered with Seven Summit Treks, one of Nepal’s largest expedition operators, for logistical support. The company will provide food, tents, and other essential supplies at both Manaslu Base Camp and the higher camps. Their experienced support staff will assist with setting up safe and comfortable staging points, allowing the rope fixing team to focus entirely on their technical mission.

This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to raising operational standards on Manaslu. Seven Summit Treks has a proven track record of managing large-scale expeditions across the Himalayas, making them a natural choice for this partnership.

Ensuring Safety and Efficiency

According to EOA President Dambar Parajuli, the move to take full control of rope fixing operations stems from a desire to improve safety, efficiency, and accountability. Rope fixing is not just about placing lines, it’s about ensuring that climbers have dependable anchor points, safe passage over crevasses, and secure access across dangerous sections like the knife-edge ridges and avalanche-prone slopes of Manaslu.

The rope fixing team will work in phases, establishing lines progressively up the mountain while acclimatizing at intermediate camps. This process can take several weeks, depending on weather conditions. Once completed, the route will serve as the backbone for all summit attempts during the season.

Historical Significance

Mt. Manaslu, standing at 8,163 meters in the Mansiri Himal range, is one of the most popular 8,000-meter peaks for autumn expeditions. Known for its breathtaking beauty and challenging terrain, it attracts hundreds of climbers from around the world each year. The rope fixing process is a critical step in making the mountain accessible to both elite climbers and guided clients.

By directly overseeing the 2025 rope fixing, EOA is making history, it will be the first time the association’s own climbing team will carry out the operation all the way to the summit. This could set a precedent for future seasons, potentially centralizing rope fixing under EOA’s direct management for other peaks as well.

Looking Ahead

With the rope fixing team set to depart tomorrow, attention will turn to the mountain as climbers and operators await updates on the progress of the route. Once the lines are in place, international climbers will begin their summit pushes, making the autumn of 2025 another busy and potentially record-breaking season on Manaslu.

The EOA has expressed confidence that this year’s approach will enhance the overall climbing experience while maintaining high safety standards. The success of the rope fixing mission will play a pivotal role in determining how smoothly the season unfolds for the hundreds of climbers preparing to take on the challenge of Manaslu’s towering slopes.
