Airfare Control and Improved Ticket Availability Agreed Upon by Stakeholders

In a bid to control airfare prices and ensure the availability of affordable and accessible flight tickets, Nepal’s Civil Aviation Authority and relevant stakeholders have reached a five-point agreement following a discussion held today.

The meeting, attended by representatives from the Civil Aviation Authority, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, and both domestic and international airline representatives, was convened due to growing complaints about increasing airfares, especially after the daily closure of Tribhuvan International Airport for 10 hours.

To address these concerns and improve air travel accessibility, the meeting resulted in several key decisions. Among them, airlines will no longer have the exclusive right to sell tickets through travel agencies, a practice known as the Ticket Booking Agent (TBA) system. Instead, all airlines will be required to adhere to this new regulation, ensuring that tickets are sold directly to consumers without intermediaries.

The agreement also mandates that airlines comply with provisions outlined in bilateral air service agreements, particularly the clause under the ‘Pricing’ heading, which prohibits airlines from charging unfairly high fares to passengers.

Additionally, the construction of a new “Taxiway” at Tribhuvan International Airport began on Kartik 23, which has been a factor in the recent complaints about increased airfares due to flight delays. The aviation authority has also decided that airlines must publish a standardized fare list based on the flight schedules and ensure that only a specified number of tickets can be sold by travel agencies, along with a fixed service charge.

The meeting, chaired by Pradeep Adhikari, Director-General of the Civil Aviation Authority, also included representatives from domestic and international airlines, as well as the General Manager of Tribhuvan International Airport, Jagannath Niraula, and officials from various ministries involved in the discussions.

These measures aim to stabilize airfare prices and improve the overall travel experience for both domestic and international passengers.
