Efforts Underway to Prevent Landslides on Kali Gandaki Corridor

The Benighat-Jomsom-Korola road, a crucial part of the national Kali Gandaki Corridor, has faced frequent disruptions due to landslides, prompting immediate action to address the issue. Efforts have begun in the Baisari-Andherikhola area, which lies on the border of Myagdi’s Raghuganga and Annapurna municipalities.

The Benighat-Jomsom road, which connects the northern region of Myagdi to Mustang and links it with the national highway, has been plagued by landslides. To combat this, a ‘rock anchoring’ technique is being implemented. This method involves drilling into the hillside, inserting rods, and creating a reinforced base to prevent further landslides.

Sub-engineer Sohan Jung Karki of the Benighat-Jomsom-Korola Road Project stated that drilling operations of up to 30 meters are underway, with rods being installed to fortify the hillside. Additionally, retaining walls are being constructed to enhance the stability of the slope.

The Kali Gandaki Corridor’s Myagdi section faces persistent issues, including landslides, flooding from auxiliary streams, and erosion by the Kali Gandaki River. These challenges have disrupted the Benighat-Jomsom road’s upgrade efforts, causing significant inconvenience for residents of Raghuganga, and Annapurna municipalities, as well as for tourists and pilgrims traveling through the region.
