Excavation and Preservation of Nine Ancient Wells in Pashupati Area

Efforts are underway to excavate and preserve nine ancient wells in the Pashupati area, which hold archaeological, historical, religious, cultural, and touristic significance. Despite mentions in various texts about these wells, they had nearly vanished over time.

To address growing concerns about the disappearance of these historical wells, Kathmandu Metropolitan City-8, in collaboration with the Department of Archaeology, initiated excavation and preservation efforts.

According to Ashaman Sangat, Chairperson of Ward No. 8 and head of the city’s Heritage Department, two wells have already been excavated and are being preserved. The first is near the Tamreshwar Mahadev Temple in Nawali Tole, and the second is in the courtyard of Indreshwar Temple in Jayabageshwari. Both wells were discovered in a buried state.

Efforts are also being made to locate and preserve the remaining seven wells. This initiative is expected to contribute to safeguarding the rich heritage and history of the Pashupati area.
