Traditional Food Festival Promotes Local Crops in Badimalika

To promote and preserve traditional crops, Malika Model Secondary School in Badimalika Municipality-8 organized a Traditional Food Festival. The school stated that with financial support from the municipality’s agriculture division, the festival was held to emphasize the importance of traditional crops grown locally while promoting their preservation.

During the festival, students prepared various indigenous dishes using traditional crops such as millet, maize, barley, foxtail millet, soybean, peas, buckwheat, and others grown locally. The eighth-grade students constructed eight exhibition stalls on the school playground, showcasing 14 traditional dishes made from local crops as part of the festival.

Badimalika Municipality Chief Amar Bahadur Khadka said the festival would help market local traditional foods and promote them nationally. He further stated that the event, focused on promoting conventional crops like buckwheat, millet, and foxtail millet and facilitating their commercialization, would significantly benefit the municipality.

Municipal Deputy Chief Nanda Kumari Thapa mentioned that the dishes prepared by the students using traditional crops would help promote and develop locally grown crops in the future. She also praised the students for their active involvement in learning and applying their skills.

At the festival, a team led by Mayor Amar Bahadur Khadka observed various traditional dishes prepared by the students, including millet momos, fritters, sweet rice pudding, dalmoth (spiced lentils), puri, and jeri (a sweet).

Mayor Khadka committed to implementing skill development programs to market the dishes prepared by the children and encourage their talents. He emphasized the municipality’s plan to promote self-reliance among students through “learning by doing” programs in community schools.
