The long-awaited upgrading work at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) has officially begun as of Friday night. The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) is undertaking significant expansion projects, which include extending the parallel ‘Taxi Way’ to the southwest, expanding the ‘International Apron’ to the north, and developing the ‘Hangar Apron’ to the east.
This crucial development work is expected to continue for approximately five months, during which time TIA will be closed to flights for 10 hours each day. Starting from November 8, the airport will remain closed from 10:00 PM to 8:00 AM daily, affecting the regular schedule of flights.
In response to the temporary closure, the government is focusing on maximizing the capacity of two other international airports—Gautam Buddha International Airport in Bhairahawa and Pokhara International Airport. Several international airlines, including Fly Dubai, Jazeera Airways, and Thai AirAsia, have already announced regular flight operations from Bhairahawa, contributing to the growing connectivity in the region.
Additionally, the government has introduced an attractive incentive package for airlines, offering concessions to encourage further operations from both airports, which have struggled with limited international flights since their openings. This move aims to strengthen Nepal’s air connectivity and reduce the impact of the temporary closure at TIA.
