Munamalika: A Hidden Gem Awaiting Infrastructure and Promotion in Dhaulagiri

Munamalika, a stunning tourist destination in Dhaulagiri Rural Municipality-3, remains overshadowed due to a lack of physical infrastructure and promotion. Nestled at an altitude of 3,700 meters above sea level, this area offers breathtaking views of the Himalayan ranges, sunrise vistas, hilly terrain, forests, and diverse wildlife, making it a potential hub for tourism development.

According to Ward Chairperson Devendra Rokaya, Munamalika boasts unparalleled views of Putha, Gurja, Sisne, Dhaulagiri, Manapathi, Annapurna, and Nilgiri ranges. Visitors can also witness the cloud play over the settlements of Myagdi and Baglung. Moreover, the trekking route from Muna to Malika Dhuri is a habitat for the rare red panda (Habre), enhancing its appeal for nature enthusiasts.

Munamalika hosts an annual fair during Buddha Purnima, drawing devotees who believe that worshiping the local deities—Jalika, Malika, and Kalika—fulfills their wishes. The area also serves as a vital grazing land for local farmers’ cattle, including cows, buffaloes, and sheep.

Despite its rich cultural and natural significance, the lack of hotels and restaurants forces visitors to carry their food and supplies. Local and provincial governments have recently begun to address this issue. Efforts include a visit by a delegation comprising representatives from Dhaulagiri Rural Municipality, including Chairperson Prem Prasad Pun, Vice Chairperson Resham Pun Magar, Ward Chairperson Rokaya, tourism entrepreneurs, journalists, locals, and municipal staff. The team organized a tourism promotion program at Munamalika.

Infrastructural development is also underway. This year, NPR 2 million from the provincial government and NPR 1.5 million from the municipality have been allocated for road construction. Once completed, this road will reduce travel time to less than an hour, significantly improving access to Munamalika.

The municipality is also conducting a feasibility study to connect Munamalika with Devi Sthan, Takamkot, and Dhorpatan’s Jaljala via trekking routes. Such initiatives are expected to establish Munamalika as a key destination for religious and eco-tourism in the region.

While challenges remain, these collective efforts indicate a promising future for Munamalika, transforming it into a sought-after destination in Nepal’s tourism map.
